Two-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling Abdulrashid Sadulayev was denied entry to Romania for the European Championships. This was announced by the head of the Russian Wrestling Federation, Mikhail Mamiashvili. According to him, “it’s hard to imagine what motivates this.”
“Abdulrashid flew from the country for which he received a visa. He flew to Barcelona, from there to Bucharest, but customs officers in Romania did not let him in, he raised doubts in them, and a decision was made to deny him entry,” Mr. Mamiashvili told TASS.
He believes that this is a loss, including for the Romanian side. “The fan was waiting for an athlete of this level; Sadulayev is one of the most desired athletes on the mats of any country,” says the head of the Wrestling Federation.
The athlete himself called Romania’s decision strange, but promised to “learn lessons and move on.” “Right at the border I was denied entry into Romania – they didn’t like my visa. It turns out somehow strange: in Spain, from where I flew to Bucharest, there were no questions for me,” Sadulayev wrote on Instagram (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned).
27-year-old Sadulayev is a five-time world champion and four-time European champion. He competes in the weight category up to 97 kg. Competitions in this weight category at the European Championships in Bucharest will begin tomorrow, February 16. On February 9, the head coach of the Russian freestyle wrestling team, Khadzhimurat Gatsalov, said that Sadulayev and another Olympic champion Zaur Uguev were denied visas for the championship.
