65% of Russians believe that the special military operation (SVO) is “rather successful” for Russian troops. These are the data of a survey conducted by VTsIOM from February 3 to 22 on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the start of the Northern Military District. The option “rather not successful” was chosen by 15% of respondents, and another 20% found it difficult to answer. In March 2022, 70% of those surveyed said the SVO was successful, and by February 2023 this figure dropped to 59%.
During the current survey, the decision to hold a SVO in Ukraine was “rather supported” by 68% of Russians, while 19% “rather did not support it.” Immediately after the start of the special operation, the share of those approving this decision was 65% (25% did not support it), and by January 2023 it increased to 68%. Among the priority goals of the Northern Military District, respondents now, as throughout the past two years, name the defense of Russia, the disarmament of Ukraine and the prevention of the deployment of NATO military bases on its territory (43%), the protection of the population of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions (20%) , as well as changing the political course of Ukraine and “cleansing it of Nazis” (15%). The option “to occupy Ukraine and annex it to Russia” was chosen by 6% of respondents (at the beginning of the Northern Military District there were 5%).
In addition, 72% of respondents believe that “every Russian should make a feasible contribution to the successful completion of the SVO” (19% rather do not support this opinion), and 64% agreed that now citizens of the Russian Federation need to live according to the principle “Everything for the front” , everything for victory.” 28% “rather disagree” with this judgment, while 8% found it difficult to answer.
