Two cases of West Nile fever detected in Rostov region

The first cases of infection with West Nile fever (WNZ) were recorded in the city of Volgodonsk, Rostov region, reported press office regional department of Rospotrebnadzor.
Specialists conducted a serological study in areas endemic for WNV (Volgodonsk, Taganrog, Neklinovsky district).
“In 13.9% of the examined, specific antibodies of class G (IgG) to the West Nile virus were found (including in Volgodonsk – 9%, Taganrog – 14%, Neklinovsky district – 18.8%), which confirms the circulation of the virus in these territories,” the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reports.
Cases of the disease were recorded in the third decade of this July. The spread of the disease is facilitated by high temperature and humidity, at which mosquitoes, carriers of the virus, breed. People visiting insect habitats in floodplains and river deltas, reservoirs and other places with high humidity fall into the risk zone. Birds that live near water also contribute to the spread of the disease. In the region, measures are being taken to exterminate carriers of a dangerous virus.
“To date, in the Rostov region, the total area of disinfection performed is: larvicidal treatment of permanent and temporary reservoirs – 309.49 hectares, against adults of mosquitoes – 192.93 hectares,” Rospotrebnadzor reports.
Residents of the region were also warned about the symptoms of West Nile fever: a rise in temperature to 38–40 ° C, chills, loss of appetite, muscle pain, especially in the calves, a rash, and in rare cases, signs of meningoencephalitis. If these symptoms appear, it is recommended to immediately seek medical help.
