Two employees of the kingdom’s National Intelligence Center (CNI) were bribed to transfer classified information to the United States – after this fact was discovered, they were expelled from Spain, El Pas newspaper reported.
The head of the Ministry of Defense, Margarita Robles, according to the publication, summoned the US Ambassador to Madrid Julissa Reynoso in early autumn and asked to explain the “malevolent actions on the part of an ally country.” Madrid’s dissatisfaction was expressed by the American diplomatic mission and the Spanish Foreign Ministry. According to the publication, at least two American agents “directly involved in the recruitment of CNI spies” were expelled from Spain.
The operation began before summer. An internal CNI review found that the suspects had accessed classified information that they did not need to perform their duties. It was determined that at least one intelligence officer was recruited to provide information in exchange for a large dollar amount.
