In Azerbaijan, early presidential elections will be held on February 7, 2024, this order signed by the current head of the republic, Ilham Aliyev.

“The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan must ensure the appointment of early elections for the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on February 7, 2024,” the document says.

Aliyev has led Azerbaijan since October 2003. Then he received 79.46% of the votes in the elections. In October 2008, Aliyev was re-elected president of the country, receiving more than 88% of the vote. In March 2009, amendments were adopted in Azerbaijan allowing the same person to hold the position of president more than twice. In October 2013, Aliyev was re-elected to a third term with 84.6% of the vote.

In September 2016, a referendum was held in Azerbaijan on changing the constitution; a total of 29 amendments were made to it, including increasing the term of office of the president from five to seven years, i.e. the next elections were not scheduled to take place until 2025.

In the 2018 elections, Aliyev was re-elected to a fourth term with 86.22% of the votes. How notes “Sputnik Azerbaijan”, those elections were the first early ones in the republic: initially, in accordance with the law, they were scheduled for October 10, but Aliyev, by his decree, announced the date of their holding as April 11.
