TV channel “Russia-Culture” will show a documentary film “Ulyanov about Ulyanov”

November 20 marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of People’s Artist of the USSR Mikhail Alexandrovich Ulyanov. For this date, the TV channel “Russia-Culture” prepared a documentary film “Ulyanov about Ulyanov”.

Mikhail Ulyanov was born in the Siberian town of Tara. Here, during the war years, he first saw the performances of a professional theater – artists from other cities of the USSR were evacuated to Tara. I saw it and fell ill with the stage. For a couple of years he studied at the studio at the Omsk Drama Theater, and continued his studies already in the capital – at the Shchukin Theater School. “After long ups and downs and failures at the Maly Theater, at the Moscow Art Theater, in the end I was accepted into the Vakhtangov Theater”, the actor recalled. Later, Mikhail Ulyanov will become the artistic director of the Theater. Vakhtangov, and this mission will take place in the difficult 1990s.

Mikhail Ulyanov created dozens of images in theater and cinema. His outstanding talent and skill allowed him to be recognizable and always different in any role. This was appreciated by both the audience and professionals – critics, fellow artists. “So understandable and so modern”, – wrote about his Mark Antony in Shakespeare’s play “Antony and Cleopatra” Lyubov Orlova. Lenin, Stalin, the majestic Julius Caesar and the chairman of the post-war collective farm … The actor was interested in both his contemporaries and the personalities of previous eras. In 1968, he made an accidental directorial debut – in Ivan Pyriev’s film The Brothers Karamazov, the shooting of which was interrupted due to the death of the director, he not only played the role of Mitya, but also helped to complete the picture.

On the artist’s birthday, November 20, the Russia-Culture channel will show the documentary film Ulyanov about Ulyanov. The tape is based on fragments of interviews with Mikhail Aleksandrovich, which he gave in different years. The artist shares memories of his family, collaboration with Konstantin Simonov, Vladimir Naumov and Alexander Alov, other masters of literature, cinema and stage. The audience will learn why the Minister of Culture of the USSR Ekaterina Furtseva was against Mikhail Ulyanov in the role of Lenin, they will see materials from the personal archive of his daughter Elena Ulyanova, excerpts from the legendary Vakhtangov play “Princess Turandot” and other works of the great actor.
