Turkmenistan banned New Year celebrations

In one of the most closed countries in Central Asia, local officials did not allow kindergartens and schools to celebrate the New Year on the territory of educational institutions. It was also prohibited to install Christmas trees in front of administrative buildings and offices. Local authorities categorically refused to comment on the introduced rules.
Meanwhile, in the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, New Year trees delight residents in only three locations: in front of one of the cultural and entertainment centers of the city, in the park and in front of the circus. And certain sections of the protocol streets – Garashsyzlyk, Bitaraplyk and Turkmenbashi – were decorated with garlands. Another New Year’s green beauty is installed in the center of the city of Arkadag.
Despite the prohibitions, local residents are thoroughly preparing to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Markets sell fresh meat, and townspeople buy food and alcohol for future use. Officials have already warned of a ban on its sale on December 31 after 10 pm.
The police began going around houses in advance with warnings about maintaining order during the New Year holidays: you cannot make noise on the streets, use fireworks and firecrackers.
