Türkiye starts working on Russia-proposed gas hub project

The Turkish parliament has begun the process of amending legislation on Russia’s proposed gas hub project, informed Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic Fatih Donmez in an interview with CNN Turk.
“The first legislative decisions in the context of the gas hub passed through the parliament. With the opening of the gas trading center, prices will also decrease, which is important for Europe,” Domnez said.
According to him, Ankara is also considering options for cooperation with other countries to transport and sell gas to Europe. In particular, there are agreements on this score with Azerbaijan on the establishment of a joint venture.
On December 28, 2022, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said that Moscow and Ankara began to work on the implementation of the project to create a gas hub in Turkey. According to him, the Russian-Turkish project will ensure transparent and fair pricing in the natural gas market.
Russian President Vladimir Putin came up with the idea of creating a new hub for Russian gas supplies last October, and in the same month, his colleague Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the agreements reached with Putin on the creation of an international gas hub in the country. Later it became known that the gas distribution center within the framework of the hub project would be located in Thrace – in the north-west of the republic. At the same time, Turkey intends to start operating the gas hub within a year, the country’s Energy Ministry announced at the end of January.
