The heads of the defense departments of Turkey Hulusi Akar, the Russian Federation – Sergei Shoigu and Syria – Ali Mahmoud Abbas at a meeting in Moscow agreed to create a tripartite commission. This was reported by Al-Jazeera referring to an informed Turkish source.
On December 28, the ministers held talks. This is the first time this has happened since the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011. Turkey, which had maintained close relations with Damascus before this conflict, took the side of the opponents of President Bashar al-Assad. Since then, Turkey’s relations with Syria have remained complicated and tense. In recent weeks, both sides, according to media publications, have started talking about the possibility of a gradual normalization.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported after the talks: the ministers discussed ways to resolve the Syrian crisis and the problem of refugees. In addition, the talks considered joint efforts to combat extremist groups in Syrian territory.
