Turkish political scientist reveals the background of the conflict between Turkey and Greece

Erdogan needs political glasses
At the end of August, relations between Greece and Turkey escalated after news that the Greek air defense system in the area of the island of Crete had captured a target when a Turkish fighter entered its recognition field. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his readiness to strike immediately in the event of an escalation of territorial disputes between the countries. Turkish political scientist Iqbal Durre believes that Erdogan’s actions are directly influenced by domestic political factors.
In an interview with Lenta.ru Durre explained that all the actions of the Turkish president in the international arena are due solely to internal circumstances. As the political scientist noted, the main reason for the aggravation of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean is the upcoming presidential elections in Turkey.
According to Durre, against the backdrop of the deepening economic crisis in the country, Erdogan feels the need to raise his rating.
The expert concluded that it seems to the Turkish leader that it is much easier to achieve success in foreign policy than to make any adjustments to the domestic economic situation in the country.
