Turkish Ombudsman wants to visit prisoner camps in Russia and Ukraine

Turkish Ombudsman Seref Malkoç announced plans to visit prisoner camps in Russia and Ukraine this week and assess their conditions. A meeting with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky is also planned.

“This week I and the delegation are heading to the combat zone in Ukraine, after that to Odessa, where we will meet with families who fled their homes due to the war, as well as with relatives of Ukrainian soldiers captured in the Russian Federation,” said Šeref Malkoch in a newspaper interview Sabah.

According to the Ombudsman, the visits should be an important step in creating a “humanitarian corridor” for the return of prisoners and children left without care to their families. After assessing the situation, he will submit reports to the leadership of the two countries and international organizations.

The Ombudsman said that thanks to the initiatives of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, progress was achieved in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He also promised “good news” in the coming days regarding the reopening of the grain corridor and the return of women, children and prisoners to their families. On March 8, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara is ready to host a peace summit on the conflict in Ukraine with the participation of Russia.
