The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassadors of nine countries after the closure of a number of consulates general in Istanbul, the Turkish channel TRT Haber reported, citing sources in the ministry.
The reaction of the Turkish ministry to the closure of diplomatic missions may be announced at the meeting, the report says. The consuls of which countries were summoned to the mission are not specified.
Earlier, the Consulate General of Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands in Turkey stopped working due to terrorist attacks in the city center. The US Embassy on January 30 warned its citizens about the danger of such incidents in the center of Istanbul. Earlier today, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, in an interview with the Hurriyet newspaper, said that such actions are a “psychological war” against the country.
Prior to this, relations between Turkey and Sweden deteriorated amid the burning of the Koran by Swedish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan. On February 1, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the Turkish side would not approve Sweden’s application to NATO due to the inaction of the Swedish authorities in relation to Paludan.
On January 30, in another action with the Koran, Paludan turned to the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, and stated that he did this “through the fault of Chechnya and its leader.” Kadyrov replied that this was “an act of a religious terrorist” from which “a healthy society needs to be freed.”
