Turkey’s imports from Russia in June fell to pre-sanction levels – Kommersant

Turkey’s imports from Russia in June 2023 amounted to $2.91 billion, the lowest monthly figure since October 2021. Energy imports decreased by 20% in monetary terms.
Attention was drawn to the data of the Turkish Institute of Statistics RBC. In June, imports of Russian goods decreased by 36% in monetary terms against May and by 43% against June 2022. In six months, products worth $24.7 billion were delivered to Turkey (10.8% less than in the same period in 2022).
China overtook Russia as Turkey’s largest supplier in June. But Russia ranks first in terms of the share of imports for six months (13.4%), China is in second place (12%).
Energy resources account for more than 60% of imports from Russia. Their deliveries decreased in monetary terms by 20% by May, to $1.76 billion. Purchases of goods under confidential items, which may include oil, fell by 18% compared to last month, to $655 million.
In physical terms, Turkey imported about 3 million tons of crude oil from all countries in June. This is 22% more than in May and 5% less than in June 2022. Total imports in monetary terms and by supplying countries are not disclosed. According to Andrey Gnidchenko, the leading expert of the CMASF, the decrease in Russia’s share in imports can be fully explained by the fall in energy prices.
