Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women is legal. This decision was made by the State Council for Administrative Appeals (İDDK), according to the Turkish TV channel Habertürk.
In 2012, Turkey was the first to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention). But in 2021, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his withdrawal from the convention.
According to Erdogan, the convention has been changed beyond recognition. Now its text is incompatible with the social and family values of Turkey.
