The President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola has launched a procedure for depriving two MPs of immunity, Belgian law enforcement agencies have previously accused them of corruption, writes TASS with reference to the message of the European legislative body.

“President Metsola has initiated an urgent procedure to strip two MEPs of their immunity at the request of the Belgian judiciary. The first procedural measures have already been taken, the chairman will announce this at the plenary meeting on January 16, then the request will be submitted to the legal committee for an appropriate decision.

The agency drowns out that we are most likely talking about two European parliamentarians who were at the epicenter of a corruption scandal related to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. So, in December, the Belgian police conducted numerous searches in Brussels, followed by the arrest of four people, including the Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili. According to the country’s prosecutor’s office, the defendants in the case are “suspected of paying large sums of money or offering significant gifts to third parties who have a political and / or strategic position that allows them to influence the decisions of the European Parliament.” The very purpose of this influence was to improve the image of Qatar in the EU before the start of the international championship.

The newspaper Le Soir previously published a photo taken by the police as a result of the searches, in which wads of money can be seen. It is noted that during the searches in the house of the ex-deputy of the European Parliament, Pier Antonio Panzeri, 600,000 euros were seized. If you add this amount to the money found at the place of residence of the dismissed Vice-President of the EP Eva Caili and her partner Francesco Giorgi, you get more than 1.5 million euros.
