Turkey hopes that the ceasefire declared by Russia in the war zone in Ukraine will be extended. This was stated by the official representative of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Ibrahim Kalin.
“It [прекращение огня] must be extended beyond that, and not just by 36 hours.” leads his words to the Anadolu agency. Kalyn said that a mutual ceasefire could not yet be reached, which “shows the stalemate” the conflict has reached.
According to him, Turkey will continue its efforts in the coming days to ensure a ceasefire in the areas adjacent to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Ankara would like the area to be free of fighting and incidents.
Kalyn reminded about consultations the Russian and Ukrainian sides in March 2022 in Istanbul and suggested that local ceasefire agreements could “turn into a kind of negotiating environment where negotiators can come together again.”
Russian side announced on the operation of the ceasefire regime on the line of confrontation with Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7. It was introduced on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin so that Orthodox residents in combat areas could celebrate Christmas. The head of state called on the Ukrainian side to also declare a ceasefire, but this initiative was not supported in Kyiv. The Russian Defense Ministry said that on January 7, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continued shelling settlements and Russian positions.
