Turkish politician Perincek: recent events in the country have an impact on Sweden’s accession to NATO

The leader of the Turkish Vatan (Homeland) party, Doğu Perinçek, said that after the New Year, events took place in Turkey that determined the country’s new period, including the issue of approving Sweden’s membership in NATO.

According to Perincek, over the past 10-15 days, so many events have happened inside Turkey that if he had been asked about Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance earlier, then, looking at the scoreboard of the Turkish parliament, he would have answered that Sweden’s membership in the bloc would be approved. He pointed out that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with this intention when sending the protocol to the grand national assembly. At the same time, the politician emphasized that after the New Year, a number of events took place in the country that determined the new period of Turkey.

He clarified that during this time the Turkish side identified and arrested spies of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, did not allow a minesweeper donated by Great Britain to Ukraine into the Black Sea, launched a tough campaign against members of the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation), the Supreme Court began an investigation in the Constitutional Court Court, and two days after Erdogan sent the protocol on Sweden’s membership in NATO to Parliament for consideration, the commander of the country’s Navy spoke out against NATO in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, which is a statement of the Armed Forces.

Perincek added that this is a historical period that Turkey is going through, and not the process that the ruling Justice and Development Party wants. According to the politician, this suggests that not everything will be as the ruling party wants.
