Former US President Donald Trump’s trial on election interference charges should be delayed until at least 2029 if Trump wins the upcoming presidential election, his lawyer Steve Sadow said. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Elections will take place in November 2024.
In addition, Trump’s lawyers do not agree that the trial against him is planned to begin in August 2024, that is, shortly before the election, the prosecutor’s office has proposed. According to the ex-president’s defense, this could be interpreted as interference in the elections.
The prosecutor’s office says that in March the case against Trump will begin to be heard by the court in Washington, in May – in Florida, that is, the next hearing in August will not in any way prevent Trump from doing business as part of the election campaign.
Earlier, a grand jury in Georgia indicted Trump and a group of people associated with him for allegedly trying to influence the outcome of the previous presidential election in that state. One of the charges against the former US President is violation of the law on criminal organizations (the so-called RICO Act), which itself provides for a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of 250 thousand dollars.
