Trudeau to apologize for honoring SS man in Canadian Parliament

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will apologize for inviting Ukrainian veteran of the SS Galicia division Yaroslav Hunku (Hunko) to parliament, the prime minister told reporters before his speech.

“In a few minutes, I will stand before all Canadians, before Jews here and around the world, and before Ukrainians, to offer Parliament’s sincere apology for what happened in [прошлую] Friday” – said he (quote from TASS).

He called the Hunku situation a mistake “that compromised Parliament and Canada.” According to him, honoring the SS man is a “monstrous outrage” against the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and other people who suffered from Nazism.

On September 22, Liberal MP Anthony Rota invited Hunka to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He was introduced as a war hero and received applause. Rota later apologized “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” Later it became known that Rota will leave from the post of Speaker of the House of Commons.

Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov named “sloppy” is the attitude towards the memory of the Second World War in Canada. He also statedthat the Canadian authorities are obliged to extradite and bring to justice Hunka. Polish Minister of Education and Science Przemyslaw Czarnek also offered consider the possibility of extraditing Hunka.
