The United States does not consider Pyongyang’s transfer of American soldier Travis King to Washington as evidence of a breakthrough in bilateral relations. This statement was made on Wednesday, September 27, by the head of the State Department press service, Matthew Miller.
The speaker of the American foreign policy department said that he would not consider what happened as evidence of some kind of breakthrough – it was, rather, a one-time event.
At the same time, Miller assured of the US openness to dialogue with the DPRK, emphasizing that “we will be happy to have diplomatic interactions with North Korea, but they have always rejected our attempts to establish contact with them.”
At the end of July, on the border between North and South Korea, American soldier Travis King, who took part in a familiarization tour, crossed into North Korean territory. It was reported that he plans to seek political asylum from Pyongyang due to his negative attitude towards the American army.
On September 27, it became known that King was already in China, then he left this country through the mediation of Sweden and was handed over to American authorities.
