Deputies of the State Council of Tatarstan accepted changes to the Family Code of the Republic, according to which people who have changed their gender are now prohibited from adopting children or becoming their guardians. Also in the regional law there is a provision that if one of the spouses changes gender, this is grounds for divorce.

The amendments were supported unanimously by parliamentarians, with 77 deputies voting in favor. Speaker of the Parliament of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin emphasized that the established bans, in his opinion, are also supported by the residents of the republic.

At the end of July, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law banning gender reassignment in Russia. It has become possible to perform gender reassignment surgery in the Russian Federation only if there are medical indications. IN federal law It is also stated that in the event of a gender change by one of the spouses, the marriage will be annulled.

The ban on transgender transition was initiated by State Duma deputies from all five factions, led by the Speaker of the House Vyacheslav Volodin. He justified the introduction of a legislative ban on gender reassignment by the need to protect the country from the “diabolical policies” of the United States, where “these new pseudo-values are being promoted.”

Lawyers and doctors working with transgender people pointed out that such restrictions violate the right to life and medical care, and also “impose an ideology.”
