Trained at street school, a Belgian magician crowned world champion

Laurent Piron started magic at the age of 18, before training in the streets, around the world. Now world champion, he is called to the four corners of the globe to present his show.
A small ball of paper that comes to life, twirls and lets itself be tamed: it is the poetic trick that earned the Belgian Laurent Piron to become world champion of magic at the end of July in Quebec, an art learned in the street.
A month later his diary is packed with invitations all over the world thanks to this issue worked on for several years by this follower of “New Magic”, who wants to be a storyteller and a creator of emotions. Far from the great illusions of showbiz. On July 30, in competition with a hundred of his colleagues, the creator of paperball, an eight-minute number, won the 1er prize in the general magic category and the grand prize of this world championship which takes place every three years, the supreme reward. “A lot of old magicians came to see me after my performance to tell me that they had reverted to childhood and had forgotten the techniques. That’s what we wanted with this ball of paper. We don’t care about special effects, the goal is magic emotion. says Laurent Piron, met in his studio in Soumagne, near Liège (east of Belgium).
Copperfield ‘blown away’
On his return to Belgium, he discovers on his phone a message of congratulations from the star of world magic, David Copperfieldthe American who passed through the Great Wall of China and made the Statue of Liberty. “He loved it, I hope we will meet. Even if he does great shows, he is a real lover of magic. He remains the undisputed master, he knows all the tricks, the tricks. We managed to bluff him with this number,” rejoices the 35-year-old illusionist, looking like a young man, in a cap and sneakers.

The son of a sound engineer in the world of entertainment and a handyman from an early age, Laurent Piron started magic at the age of 18, learning his first tricks with a friend. They put on small shows together until he left at the age of 22 for Vancouver, Canada, where he met street magicians. “The street gave me knowledge of the trade and the relationship with the public. If the audience doesn’t like you, they move on. You have to have enough energy, catchphrases, jokes, catch the eye. The street taught me how to develop my character to attract the crowd. Afterwards, I mixed theater in it”.
After several years of passing the hat “following the sun” in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the summer in Europe, the magician returns to Belgium in search of a stronger link with the theatre. “I’ve always liked theatrical magic, a narration that will bring visuals, not just glitter boxes or a rabbit out of a hat, and then I discovered “New Magic””. Seduced by this movement which uses illusion with other forms of art to create a new language, he will follow a training in France at the National Center for Circus Arts (CNAC) in 2015.
“The magic then becomes pure entertainment and we get out of the balance of power between the magician and his audience”, explains Laurent Piron, associated for his creations with a director and a playwright within the company Alogical. He hopes that this new trend will revalue magic, “poor relative” live arts, as happened with the circus, and regrets that too often magician’s shows are devoid of artistic research on light, visuals, text.
The magician, who received an influx of proposals following his award to show his number to the public or to his peers in Japan, England or Las Vegas, would like to perform at Broadwaya dream but for once not an illusion.
