Traffic of Russian news sites fell by 2.5 times in six months

In August of this year, Russians began to visit news sites 2.5 times less often than in March, and the number of unique users has halved over this period. It is reported by “RIA Novosti” with reference to the study of MTS.
“Starting from April, traffic to news resources has been gradually declining: by the end of August, the number of unique users has fallen by half compared to March, and traffic by 2.5 times,” the document read by the agency says.
At the same time, the volume of data transfer increased by 15% on sites with news about celebrities, by 20% – on sites with humorous stories, by 10% – on sources with news from the world of cinema.
The authors of the study concluded that users have switched to entertainment content and mobile games. Attendance of online cinemas in August increased by 32% compared to March. The largest increase in traffic was shown by Kion (120%), Wink (110%) and Kinopoisk (90%). Mobile game traffic grew by 60%. Russians began to play more in Genshin Impact (traffic rose by 70%), Candy Crush Saga (50%) and Call of Duty (40%).
The volume of data transfer has also increased on streaming services. The most active were the Russian platform WASD, which is part of the MTS ecosystem, and the Chinese Trovo — the traffic of both resources increased by 120%.
At the end of August, Yandex announced that it would transfer the Novosti and Zen VK services in exchange for the Delivery Club food delivery service. In return, VK will receive not only Yandex information platforms, but also visitors to its main page: traffic from yandex.ru will be redirected for some time to a site controlled by VK.
