Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko, in an interview with RIA Novosti, commented on the consequences for the Russian economy from Finland’s closure of the checkpoint on the border with the Russian Federation. In her opinion, mutual trade between Russia and Europe has “degraded,” but this does not harm the Russian economy.
“This is an ill-considered policy of the European Union, and it does not cause any harm to us. Our mutual trade with Europe has simply deteriorated, our mutual trade with Finland is less than $1 million,” this is how she answered the question about how the closure of the checkpoint on the border with Finland could affect the supply of products from Russia to other countries.
According to Victoria Abramchenko, only the Finnish economy can suffer from the decisions of the Finnish government. “We will not suffer from this for sure; whether the Finnish economy will suffer is something we need to ask the Finns,” she said.
From the beginning of November 2023, Finland began to introduce restrictions on entry from Russia. The last time the restrictions changed was on December 15, when the Finnish government decided to close the two checkpoints of Vaalimaa (Torfyanovka) and Niirala (Värtsilä) until January 14. At the moment, transport links between Russia and Finland can only pass through the Vainikkala point.
