Wealthy Russians have begun to more often choose domestic holidays during the New Year holidays. Market participants reported this partly forced trend to Kommersant FM. Tourists started booking 5-star hotels for the first days of January in the summer.
At the same time, the geography of premium tours in Russia is still extremely limited, and therefore hotels inflate prices in the high season, noted Aleksan Mkrtchyan, vice-president of the Alliance of Travel Agencies:
“The category of people who previously chose premium holidays in Nice are now holidaying in Sochi and Yalta. Therefore, we noticed, of course, a catastrophic shortage of “5 star” and “5 star deluxe” hotels.
The geography of premium holidays is extremely narrow, literally one hotel each on Lake Baikal, Altai and Kaliningrad, about five or six on the Black Sea. Currently in Russia there is a shortage of approximately 1 thousand hotels of the 4-star level and above, so such accommodation facilities greatly inflate the price.
The same thing will happen in the New Year with ski holidays. Villas will cost 300-400 thousand rubles. per day, and people are willing to pay. Moreover, some of the options were sold out back in August.
In Kamchatka, for example, clients can leave 2 million rubles. for 10 days, including helicopters, excursions, but these are not even close to premium trips, just an expensive vacation, that’s all.”
Over the past few years, the demand for VIP tours around the country has increased by 30%, according to the Russian Union of Travel Industry. Among the most popular destinations during the New Year holidays are Altai, Kamchatka and Sochi.
The average cost of accommodation for ten days starts from 300 thousand rubles, said Ekaterina Pokhotsinskaya, executive director of President Travel:
“One of the most popular locations is Altai. There are now excellent hotel options with good New Year’s programs. By the way, this also applies to Kamchatka. In winter, it is also quite in demand due to the ski slopes.
But the best ski resort in Russia is, of course, Sochi. If we talk about Altai, then the skiing there is just a little different, the mountain range is more dense.
As for winter events, you can choose a New Year’s folk festival, or arrange a real Russian holiday. In the southern region there are now many sanatoriums or holiday homes of a good standard. There, too, there is an interesting selection of programs both as part of a ski holiday and as part of the Caucasian Mineral Waters.
Holidays in Russia are not budget-friendly. On average, its cost can be from 300 thousand rubles. up to 2 million rubles.”
At the same time, the infrastructure for premium winter recreation, although slowly, is developing, emphasized Andrey Shemyakin, managing partner of the consulting company SEA Company. At the same time, according to him, we are talking not only about popular ski resorts:
“In Russia there really aren’t that many premium-level hotels and resorts, but at the same time the hotel business is developing very actively. The so-called surge in intraregional tourism continues.
People want to go to small towns with a rich history and are also looking for premium holidays there. And there is one. This year a new resort, Grand Chalet Altay, opened in Altai, and, for example, in Tambov there is a wonderful park hotel “Ples”. Not only does it have a spa, comfortable rooms of different categories, but also its own cheese factory, an amazing restaurant and more than 10 km of eco-routes.
But I would say that today the premium market demand for accommodation exceeds supply.
Meanwhile, despite the departure of Western operators, the people in the hotel business remain the same. All standards, operating systems, the hotel buildings themselves, design, and manner of communication have been preserved, so in the short term, hotel owners only benefited.”
As a recent joint survey of the YuKassa service, the tour operator Anex and the Sutochno.ru website showed, about 15% of Russians plan to spend the New Year holidays abroad in warm countries.
