What is “Total Dictation”
“Total Dictation” is an annual event in the form of a voluntary dictation for everyone. It is organized by the foundation of the same name with the help of activists and volunteers. The organizers set themselves educational goals. They believe that dictation disseminates knowledge of spelling and punctuation, reveals difficult-to-learn language rules, and also attracts the attention of the media and the public to educational problems. The text for the dictation is traditionally composed by one of the Russian writers.
How the “Total Dictation” will take place in 2024
In 2024, the dictation will take place on April 20. This time the author of the text was the writer and journalist Anna Matveeva, whose works critics refer to the direction of Ural magical realism. According to her, the topic of the dictation will be diaries, since it is in them that the living language is displayed.
The event was first held for students of the Humanities Faculty of Novosibirsk University in 2004. In 2023, 456 thousand people took part in it. The text of the dictation was then composed by the writer Vasily Avchenko. It was dedicated to the geographer and writer Vladimir Arsenyev.
“Total dictation” takes place in the first half of the day, at approximately 13:00. The total time for the dictation, including instructions, is 60 minutes. Evaluation criteria are established based on all reference options for setting punctuation marks. A five is given if there are no errors or one punctuation error is made, a four is given for two to four errors, a three is given if no more than eight errors are made. Excellent dictation students will not receive advantages when entering universities.
How to register for “Total Dictation” in 2024
To participate in the “Total Dictation” you need to register on website promotions and fill out the form with personal data. The exact time for the dictation will be indicated on the same resource. On the day of the event, you must have a pen and identification document with you.
In Moscow, the dictation will be held at more than 200 venues, their list available on the promotion website. You can write a dictation offline, online or in self-test mode. In the second case, you will need to type from dictation in a special browser window. You can find out your result in your personal account on the website.
