The torch of the 1968 Winter Olympics, held in the French city of Grenoble, went under the hammer for $ 187.5 thousand, according to the website of the American auction house RR Auction.
The description of the lot says that this is one of 33 torches produced by the French company Societe Technique d’Equipement et de Fournitures Industrielle (STEFI) for the 1968 Olympics. It is made of rose gold bronze alloy with a red felt handle and weighs 3.6 kg.
According to the seller of the torch, its original owner installed and operated the gas equipment that ignited the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony.
The Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble were held from 6 to 18 February 1968. According to the results of the competition, the Norwegian team led the medal standings with six gold, six silver and two bronze medals. The second place was taken by the USSR team (5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze), the third place went to the French team (4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze).
