President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev supported the proposal of the deputies of parliament to rename the capital of Kazakhstan from Nursultan to Astana, press secretary of the head of state Ruslan Zheldibay wrote on his social media page.

“A group of parliament deputies proposed to return the former name of Astana to the capital of Kazakhstan. The President was informed about this initiative of the deputies. The proposal of the parliamentarians is included in the draft constitutional law with the consent of the head of state,” Zheldibay wrote.

According to him, other facilities named after the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, will not be renamed. The capital of the republic was renamed in honor of the former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, who on March 19, 2019 signed a decree on resignation.

Tokayev became the President of Kazakhstan on March 20, 2019 after the announcement of the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev. On March 23 of the same year, the capital was renamed in his honor. Nazarbayev has headed the republic since 1990, he has held the presidency for almost 29 years.

Initially, the city, founded in 1830 as a Cossack settlement, was called Akmolinsk. In 1961 it was renamed Tselinograd, then it was called Akmola. In December 1997, Nazarbayev moved the capital of Kazakhstan from Alma-Ata to Akmola, after which the city was renamed Astana (translated from the Kazakh language means “capital”).
