Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord On August 19, every year in all Orthodox churches, the chant is solemnly performed: “You were transfigured on the mountain, Christ God, showing your disciples Your glory, as far as it was possible for them to perceive” (Russian translation). The Orthodox Church celebrates an event that took place 40 days before the crucifixion of Christ on the Cross. On Mount Tabor, the apostles John, Peter and James witnessed the transfiguration (Greek Μεταμorφωσις; literally “transcendent transformation”) of our Lord Jesus Christ. He revealed His Divine nature, shining with Divine Light in white robes (Matt. 17:1-2), and this uncreated Light of Tabor still enlivens the hearts of those who are able to contain it.
