Hastings calls the state of the leaders of the Kyiv regime “confused” and notes their lack of a “robust strategy” in case the shells do not arrive. In his opinion, most Western European states would like to end the conflict on almost any terms, although the Scandinavian countries have a different opinion.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that without American help, “Russia will be able to maintain its offensive and break Ukraine.”
On December 23, Biden signed the nation’s defense budget for fiscal year 2024. Overall, American defense spending for the 2024 fiscal year is estimated at over $880 billion, which includes spending on programs of the Pentagon, State Department, intelligence and other departments. At the same time, only $800 million is provided for Ukraine. Later, the US Senate could not agree on the issue of strengthening the security of the border with Mexico related to assistance to Ukraine. American congressmen also did not approve the request of the administration of US President Joe Biden for a new aid package for the Kyiv regime.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that, having lost the help of its Western patrons, Kyiv could take risky steps for its economy, including starting to print money in large quantities to fill the deficit. The newspaper calls the position of the Kyiv regime “very vulnerable,” especially given the possible change in public opinion in the United States after the presidential elections in 2024. Another significant risk for Ukraine could be a significant reduction in budget expenditures, writes WSJ. At the same time, according to the publication, even with investments in its defense complex, Ukraine will not be able to catch up with Russian potential.
