Australian boxer Tim Tszyu without a fight became the world champion according to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in the weight category up to 69.9 kg. The title was lost to Jermell Charlo from the USA, who refused to defend the title and instead fought for the title of absolute world champion in the weight category up to 76.2 kg. Tim Tszyu is the son of the absolute world champion Russian Konstantin Tszyu, who was born after the family moved to Australia.
Tszyu received the title after Charlo entered the ring against Mexican Saul Alvarez. The WBO decided in August that the American would be presented as world champion, but would be stripped of the title as soon as he entered the ring.
The 28-year-old Tszyu has 23 wins (17 by knockout) and no defeats. In March 2023, he won the title of interim WBO world champion and defended the belt in June. On October 15, he must defend his world title against American Brian Mendoza in Australia.
Tim Tszyu also has the titles of champion of Australia and Asia according to the International Boxing Federation, continental Asia according to the World Boxing Council, Asia-Pacific region according to the WBO and others.
Tim Tszyu was born in 1994, two years after his parents moved to Australia from Russia. Konstantin Tszyu divorced Tim’s mother in 2013 and moved to Moscow.
