TikTok fined 345 million euros for collecting children’s data in the EU

The Chinese social network TikTok was fined 345 million euros for processing personal data of children in the European Union. About it reported at the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC).
The platform, according to the commission, violated privacy laws in 2020. Accounts of minors were not age verified before registration. In addition, a disruption in the functioning of the parental control function was noted.
The representative office of the social network did not agree with the decision of the DPC, since TikTok began to regulate data on children’s accounts even before the commission’s investigation began in the fall of 2021, Reuters wrote. It is noted that this is the first time that TikTok has received a reprimand from the DPC.
On April 4, the British Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined TikTok 12.7 million pounds sterling ($15.8 million) for violations in the collection of personal data of users under 13 years of age.
At the end of 2022, a bill to ban TikTok was introduced into the US Parliament. Later, the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US Congress approved a project that gives the country’s president the right to impose a ban on the work of the Chinese social network in the country.
Lawmakers attributed this to the alleged use of American user data by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It is proposed to introduce a ban, in particular, in relation to the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the social network. However, a full ban on the operation of the application was never introduced in the United States.
