US senators will introduce a bill that would allow US President Joe Biden to ban foreign social media, including the Chinese platform TikTok. This was announced by the chairman of the special committee on intelligence of the US Senate Mark Warner (Democrat from Virginia).

Last week, March 1, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a draft law that gives the president the right to impose a ban on the work of the TikTok social network in the country: 24 congressmen supported the document, 16 opposed.
In this regard, the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China expressed protest and called on Washington to respect market principles and stop putting pressure on individual companies.
As CNBC notes, U.S. lawmakers have a long way to go before the TikTok ban becomes a reality. First, the bill must be approved by the Senate, and only then it will be submitted for signature to Joe Biden. The President of the United States, in turn, can either approve the document or veto it.
A bill to ban TikTok was submitted to the US Parliament in December 2022. It also suggests the possibility of imposing sanctions against media companies controlled by Russia, China, and others. According to the authors of the initiative, other countries can use social networks to “control or monitor Americans” , so such a law would “protect Americans from the threat of a number of hostile states.”
The legislators explained the need to block TikTok by saying that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could allegedly use this social network to its advantage. It is proposed to impose a ban on the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the social network.
