Thunderbolt at Chelsea, coach Thomas Tuchel takes the door

Chelsea have parted ways with coach Thomas Tuchel the day after losing to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
The English club Chelsea announced the separation from its coach, Thomas Tuchel, this Wednesday, the day after the defeat at Dinamo Zagreb (1-0) on Matchday 1 of the Champions League group stage. “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to express their gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts“, announced the Blues in a press release.
Tuchel, who arrived in January 2021 to succeed Frank Lampard, had won the Champions League only a few months after settling down in London. He had already reached the final in 2020when he was coaching Paris Saint-Germain, of which he had been dismissed in December of the same year. Under the orders of the 49-year-old German, Chelsea also lifted the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup last season.
Tuchel pays for the disappointing start to the season for his team, 6th in the Premier League after six days. The Blues had notably conceded a draw against their rival, Tottenham (2-2), before losing heavily to Leeds (3-0). They were also beaten by Southampton (2-1) and had the greatest difficulty beating West Ham last Saturday (2-1). The defeat this Wednesday, at Dinamo Zagreb, at the start of the Champions League, will therefore have been right for the position of the former Parisian.
A surprisingly early dismissal
The dismissal of Tuchel comes particularly early in the season, even if tensions had already filtered in recent weeks. He had struggled to hide his annoyance with his club’s transfer window, which did not recruit a pure goalscorer after the departure of Romelu Lukaku for Inter Milan. Chelsea had however ranked 3rd in the Premier League last season, and had long dominated Real Madrid, who eliminated them in the quarter-finals of the Champions League (1-3, 2-3). But his team had lost their defensive solidity: they had conceded 24 goals in the first 50 matches under Tuchel, and 53 in the next 50.

Tuchel’s departure comes the day after his 100th match on the bench for the Blues, and exactly… 100 days after taking office from the new owner, Todd Boehly. “The Chelsea staff will take charge of the team for training and preparation for the next matches while waiting for a new coach to be appointed“said the Blues in their press release. The London club travels to its neighbor, Fulham, this Saturday, before receiving RB Salzburg in the Champions League, then a clash in the league against Liverpool.
