Russian astronauts were the first in the world to make a stratospheric jump from a height of more than 10 thousand meters to the North Pole, the Russian company RuVDS reported. The astronauts jumped from the Il-76 aircraft and were in free fall for about two minutes.

“The record was set by pilot-cosmonaut Hero of Russia Mikhail Kornienko, pilot-instructor Alexander Lynnik and founder of the Stratonavtika aerospace laboratory Denis Efremov,” RuVDS told TASS. The astronauts opened their parachutes at an altitude of about 1 km.

The Il-76 also dropped northern equipment for deployment on a drifting ice floe in the Arctic. “Stratospheric landing will have to implement one more mission task – the deployment of the Arctic data center of the Russian hosting provider RuVDS,” the company added. The project plans to use a satellite launched by the hosting provider into orbit in July 2023.

Mikhail Kornienko reported in the program the day before “Roscosmos”that one of the most risky factors during such a jump is a temperature of -55°C at an altitude of 10 thousand meters. Before the jump, the crew underwent comprehensive training in polar conditions, including training in a pressure chamber, working with oxygen equipment and natural jumps.
