“Three Brothers” took the Grand Prix of the Moscow Film Festival

The closing ceremony of the MIFF this year looked extremely laconic. It was led by director Pyotr Buslov, the same one who once shot the sensational “Boomer”.
The action, without any curtsies and introductions, immediately went to its main road: the awarding of prizes.
“Golden Saint George” from the hands of the chairman of the jury Rahul Ravel received the director of the Chilean-Argentine film “Three Brothers”. Francisco Paparella, captivated by Dostoevsky’s work, did not waste his time in Moscow during the festival, he visited the writer’s house-museum and confessed his love to The Brothers Karamazov, who, in fact, inspired him to create the prize-winning painting.
The chairman of the jury, in turn, spoke about the difficulty of choosing: it was difficult for the jury to reach a consensus, since cinema is not a sport and the criteria for winning here are ambiguous. The film “Three Brothers”, according to the chairman of the jury, is a film with a strong story and other necessary elements that characterize a powerful spectator cinema.
Karen Shakhnazarov, head of Mosfilm, received the Golden Saint George award for his contribution to world cinema.
– The Moscow festival has played a very important role in my life. He opened the world of great cinema for us. We saw not only great paintings, but also those who created them, – said Karen Georgievich, mentioning in his speech Fellini, Kapoor, Marquez, Truffaut. – My parents watched Stanley Kramer’s film “Ship of Fools” at the MIFF. They approached Kramer in the lobby after the screening. They said that the son was studying to be a director, and asked what Kramer could wish him. Kramer took a piece of paper and wrote one word – “patience”.
Italian director Giorgio Cugno, chairman of the jury of the short film competition, presented the award to the Chinese film “Everything”, distinguished by originality of the story, dramaturgy and unbridled energy. Director Lu Halai heartily kissed the prize on stage.
– Many thanks to Moscow – this cinematic capital. We see in this festival a temple of cinematography. Thank you to the great Russian people for the warmth,” said Lu Halai.
The chairman of the jury of the documentary film competition, Chinese woman Hao Yun, testified that the documentary film competition was extremely strong, the films contained valuable observations of the authors of modern society and life.
But among other things, the jury was most struck by a film about cold and loneliness, dreams and soul, conviction and release. This is “The History of Russian Prisons. Vladimirsky Central, directed by Yulia Bobkova.
– What a prison, such a state, because this film is especially significant, – said Yulia Bobkova, receiving the award, admitting that the film went through her director’s vision and transformed its author.
Disputes about the winner within the jury of the Russian Premieres competition continued almost until the morning. As a result, the jury, which included Alexei Uchitel, screenwriter Andrey Zolotarev and actress Anna Snatkina, did not appear on stage in full force according to the rules.
– It was a very worthy program, – said Alexei Uchitel, noting that the jury even asked the organizers for an additional prize, which they were not given. Limited to two special mentions. “Secret Attraction” by Stasia Venkova and “Montevideo Unit” by Tatyana Lyutaeva were noted. The award was taken by “The Edge of the Broken Moon” by Svetlana Samoshina.
Svetlana Samoshina thanked Natalia Meshchaninova (scriptwriter), Bakura Bakuradze (her master), Alexander Proshkin (art director) and the producers of her tape from the stage.
The jury of the main competition, headed by Rahul Ravel, also went up on stage in full force. Actors Samal Yaslyamova (Kazakhstan), Alexei Guskov and Svetlana Ivanova (Russia), director and screenwriter Ciro Guerra from Colombia distributed the prizes as follows.
“Silver St. George” for the performance of the best female role went to the Japanese actress Kaho Seto “Fragile Flowers in the Stream of Days”.
The award for the performance of the best male role was presented by actress Svetlana Ivanova. She was impressed by the work of actor Fernando Arce (“Those who are below”). According to the director of the film Alejandro Quiroga, who promised to transfer this prize, “Fernando is the best actor in Bolivia today, but the country’s cinema is in dire need of the support of the authorities.”
The Special Jury Prize “Silver St. George” was awarded to the Canadian-Bulgarian film “FI1.618” by Teodor Ushev.
Aleksey Guskov handed over the prize for best director to the author of the Mexican “Black Moon” Tonatya Garcia. By the way, the same picture also received the Audience Choice Award.
“Our film is dedicated to all those peoples who are fighting for their right to access natural resources,” Garcia said, noting that both the award and the name of Sergei Eisenstein, who came to his country at the beginning of the 20th century, are especially dear to him.
Nikita Mikhalkov, congratulating all the winners on their victory, said that the 45th MIFF showed more than 200 films in 391 sessions, that the festival was attended by 38 thousand spectators, that it was attended by 6 thousand accredited and 1.5 thousand journalists.
The closing film of the 45th MIFF was the sports drama 42 Seconds, which tells about the participation of the Spanish water polo team in the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona.
“42 Seconds” is based on a true story, this picture surprises, first of all, with an unconventional presentation of sports material.
