The administration of the Volokolamsk urban district plans to carry out work to preserve the cultural heritage site “Line of Defense (trenches), 28 Panfilov soldiers at the Dubosekovo crossing.” These are authentic trenches preserved in the place where on November 16, 1941, heroes from Panfilov’s division stopped the advance of the Nazi invaders in an unequal battle.
As MK was told at the Volokolamsk Kremlin Museum (the Panfilov Heroes Museum is its branch), the main goal of the upcoming work is to restore the historical appearance of the defense line. The last time such work was carried out was in 1975, when the memorial was opened. Since then, the trenches have become shallow (in some places they are as deep as an adult’s knee), and almost all the wooden structures have collapsed. In addition, after heavy rains, the trenches are flooded, and visitors to the exhibition cannot descend into them.
The city district administration announced a tender for the preparation of scientific and design documentation for the implementation of work to preserve the trenches. The organization that wins it will have to examine the monument, find out what work needs to be done, and make a conclusion about the possibility of adapting the cultural heritage site for modern use. In addition, before the start of work, photo and video recording of the monument will be carried out. The appearance of the monument will be restored using photographs from the 70s.
During the work, only domestic materials and equipment will be used. The main condition is that they be wear-resistant, so that the trenches remain the same as they will be after restoration for as long as possible.
