The Ensérune oppidum, ancient crossroads
L’oppidum of Ensérune, fortified city located about ten kilometers from Béziers (Hérault) was, for centuries, a meeting point. Busy VIe century BC. AD at the end of the Ier century AD, the site built at a crossroads land routes and maritime was placed under the successive influences of the Greeks, of the EtruscansRomans and Iberians.
The vestiges of the agglomeration testify to the commercial vitality of this center thrown not far from the Mediterranean. However, the site declined with the rise of Narbo Martius, the future Narbonne founded by the Romans. As in chemistry, “nothing is lost, nothing is created: everything is transformed” : the new city takes over the activities of the old oppidum, illustrating the ancient dynamics of the territory. The archaeological site of Ansérune is to be discovered with its museum which has just reopened after two years of work.
