Andrei Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Defense Committee, said there was no need to extend military service in the Russian army to two years. In his opinion, a modern young man “is able to master all military specialties in a maximum of six months.”

“Why then keep a person in the army for another year if he will go through the same thing?” – Mr. Kartapolov noted (quote from “Interfax”). When asked by a journalist about the need to serve for more than six months, Andrey Kartapolov explained that skills should not only be acquired, but also practiced for their application.

Today, July 21, Andrey Kartapolov informedthat the lower limit of the draft age will remain the same, they will be drafted into the Russian army from 18 to 30 years old. The norms will come into force from the spring call. The draft age will be raised to 30 years from January 1, 2024.

In November 2022, State Duma deputy from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet (United Russia) came up with an initiative to increase the term of service to two years starting in 2023. However, this proposal was not supported, the bill was not introduced.
