Theologian Andrei Kuraev, deprived of the rank of protodeacon of the Moscow diocese by the decision of Patriarch Kirill, announced his emigration. In his Telegram channel he published photos of suitcases and bags. According to him, the departure took place on November 4, National Unity Day.
“It turned out funny: he broke away on the day of national unity. It’s just the fate of a dissident,” wrote Andrei Kuraev under a photo with a pile of suitcases. In October he said about plans to go on “labor emigration” to the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague.
Patriarch Kirill approved the decision to defrock Protodeacon Andrei Kuraev back in 2021, but it did not come into force for two years due to the current moratorium. The Patriarch lifted this moratorium in the spring of this year.
In the summer of 2022, Andrei Kuraev was fined under the article of discrediting the army. He promised to “take the path of correction” because he did not want to leave Russia. In the fall of this year, informing about the decision to emigrate, Andrei Kuraev said that in Europe he could still hold public meetings and give lectures. The theologian called his departure “labor emigration.”
