On March 25, Russia celebrated the Day of the Cultural Worker. This is a holiday for those for whom culture has become a profession: people of creative specialties, custodians of cultural heritage.
There are many such people in Moscow. According to the Mosstat, for 9 months of 2022, there were 47,900 employees in state and municipal institutions of the capital. Among them – almost 9 thousand artists and 687 representatives of artistic professions: artists, sculptors, graphic artists.
In 2021, there were 336 cultural and leisure organizations in Moscow. These include clubs, houses of culture and other similar institutions. It is interesting that in the capital during the coronavirus epidemic, their number not only did not decrease, but even increased. For example, in 2019 there were 282 such institutions in Moscow.
As of the beginning of 2022, there were 74 museums in Moscow. In the “covid” years, the number of visitors dropped sharply: for example, in 2019, 24.6 million people visited the capital’s museums, and only 9.1 million in 2021. On average, there are 717 museum visitors per 1,000 Muscovites. However, we must not forget that many of them are visitors.
In February 2023, a ticket to a museum or an exhibition cost an average of 325.18 rubles in Moscow.
At the beginning of 2022, there were 301 public libraries in Moscow, and there are 6.5 thousand copies of the library fund for one thousand Muscovites. An interesting question arises: how many Muscovites have read so many books in their lifetime? There is something to strive for!
In 2021, 1.6 million people used library services. Unlike theaters and museums, the number of library visitors did not drop much during the covid years. This was facilitated by the development of electronic services.
At the same time, the number of books is growing: according to the Russian Book Chamber, in 2021, 63.4 thousand books and brochures were published in the capital with a total circulation of 337.1 million copies. Also in the capital in 2021, 2.9 thousand magazines were published with a total annual circulation of 425.3 million copies and 472 newspapers with a total annual circulation of 2.0 billion copies.
Theaters are worth mentioning separately. In addition to the Day of Cultural Workers, theater workers celebrate another professional holiday in March: Theater Day on March 27. Meanwhile, almost a fifth of all theaters in Russia are concentrated in Moscow and the Moscow region – more precisely, 18.8 percent. In the capital at the beginning of 2022, there were 94 professional theaters.
In the “covid” years, the attendance of the capital’s theaters has noticeably decreased. For comparison: in 2019, 7.7 million people visited theaters, and only 3.7 million in 2021. According to Mosstat, in February 2023, a theater ticket cost 1,994.89 rubles in Moscow.
