The American newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) dedicated one of its editorials published on March 31 speakers arrest in Russia of his journalist Evan Gershkovich. At the end of the note, the author expresses the hope that the US authorities will expel the Russian ambassador and all Russian journalists from the country.
“The administration of US President Joe Biden will have to consider diplomatic and political escalation. The expulsion of the Russian ambassador to the United States, as well as all Russian journalists working here, is the minimum you can count on, ”the WSJ article says.
The arrest of Evan Hershkowitz, the column says, shows “the declining ability of the United States to deter attacks on its citizens.” At the same time, the duty of the American authorities, the author writes, is to protect citizens, while “too many governments today believe that they can arrest and imprison Americans with impunity.”
Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on the WSJ column during a press call. He said there was no reason to expel the Russian ambassador and journalists from the United States.
WSJ journalist Evan Gershkovich was detained March 30 in Yekaterinburg. On March 31, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow arrested him for two months in a case of espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code). According to the FSB, the journalist collected information about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, which constitutes a state secret.
On the day of the arrest, the WSJ editorial board denied allegations of espionage against their journalist. On the afternoon of March 31, US President Joe Biden called for the release of Evan Gershkovich, but at the same time said that he would not expel the Russian ambassador and journalists from the country.
