Laurie and George Chappelle were born in 1961 in Pennsylvania with partially fused skulls and sharing vital blood vessels and 30% of their brains, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
The couple died April 7 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to an obituary posted online by Leibensperger Funeral Home. The cause of death remains unknown, Sky News notes.
Holding the title of the world’s oldest living conjoined twins as of 2022, George and Laurie also became the first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as opposite sexes, after George came out as transgender in 2007.
The Chappelle twins defied medical predictions that they wouldn’t live past 30 and managed to live separate lives despite being attached to each other.
George had a successful career as a country singer, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, while Laurie was a bowling cup winner.
In September 2011, they also appeared in numerous documentaries and on ITV’s This Morning, talking about their lives.
Video footage of the couple showed Laurie, who was healthy, moving George, who suffered from a condition known as spina bifida, in a wheelchair.
They lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania and were able to pursue different hobbies and shower separately.
When George was asked in a 1997 documentary if they wanted to break up, he replied: “Absolutely not. My theory is: Why fix something that isn’t broken?”
Laurie and George are survived by their father, six siblings, several nieces and nephews, and a large family of friends, according to obituaries.
