The world’s only ice-resistant self-propelled platform (LSP) “North Pole” went on its maiden voyage. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, it can arrive at the place of work without involving an icebreaker, drift in the Arctic Ocean for up to two years and return back to the port.
The expedition “North Pole – 41” went to the LSR to the Central Arctic. It will continue the domestic program of drifting polar stations, founded back in 1937.
Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov noted that over the past decade, customers have received 19 research vessels for various purposes. Until 2035, 13 more will be built.
The new platform, according to Manturov, is designed to operate for 30-35 years, taking into account the average repair. That is, Russian polar explorers are provided with a “reliable base” at least until 2050.
According to the General Director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov, the ship is able to withstand ice compression during drift and withstand the most severe weather conditions.
The head of Roshydromet, Igor Shumakov, said that in the near future his department would receive reliable information that would be very useful for studying ice, laying routes and ensuring Russia’s security.
