The average duration of such work is 4 hours 20 minutes per day for women and 1 hour 53 minutes for men. However, this labor is not taken into account in the economy, as it is outside the market relations, according to the project “To be precise.”
According to experts, almost any kind of domestic work performed by women could be done for payment by other people. This is the so-called “third party test”, which helps to understand whether a certain activity can be valued as part of the national income. UN gender expert Zoya Khotkina notes that almost all types of domestic work can be valued in monetary terms. “The family consumes food, women who do household chores prepare it. Their work can be evaluated in rubles and wages. You can not cook, but go to a restaurant, do not clean the apartment, but hire someone, ”the expert says.
So, in 2021, Russian women spent 91 billion hours on housework – or 11 billion working days. If this work were paid as the median salary in Russia, it would cost 22.3 trillion rubles, which is equivalent to 17% of GDP.
