Lithuanians start receiving brutal electricity bills

Lithuania is feeling the consequences of sanctions against Russia. So, due to millions of electricity bills, the famous Rokiškė suris cheese company had to lay off about 100 employees. Sports clubs were forced to close swimming pools, and residents of the republic were asked to consider the option of remote work. All this in order to save on electricity.

However, the government of Lithuania – the country that has taken the most aggressive stance towards Russia – does not seem to care how ordinary citizens get out of debt. “There are more serious problems than bills,” Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said and received a flurry of negativity in response.

One of the best-known Lithuanian cheese producers in Lithuania was forced to admit that it could not cope with electricity bills. They said they had already said goodbye to a hundred workers. This is the only way the company can pay for electricity – a bill for 1.5 million euros has arrived at the office of the company, which is located in Ukmergė.

The company added that since July, the increase in electricity prices has become unbearable. If the situation does not improve, the consequences will be felt by about 5,000 agricultural workers cooperating with the enterprise.

In some sports clubs in Lithuania, the local press notes, the operation of swimming pools has been temporarily suspended, and hot water has been turned off in public places. Another measure to save energy could be a three-day work week – it is proposed to introduce remote work from home on Mondays and Fridays. However, working from home will be very uncomfortable – in apartments the temperature will not exceed 19 degrees Celsius.

The Lithuanian government seems to have stuck its head in the sand and refuses to acknowledge the crisis that has come. Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte made a loud statement that some people (referring to the inhabitants of Ukraine) have “much more serious problems than heating or electricity bills.” With her careless statement, Simonyte caused a storm of negativity among local residents:

“Why is everyone mentioning this conflict in Ukraine? It makes me neither cold nor hot. There are conflicts in other parts of the world as well. For example, in Pakistan, a third of the country was under water. And what, because of this, we should be malnourished and live in the cold? Rave”.

“Why should I look up to those who are worse off? I was promised a blessing and I deserve a better life, and Madame Simonyte is obliged to take care of this.

“We are not able to solve social problems in peacetime, to respond in time. Europe has long supported working people because of the price and energy crisis. And our people only say that there are no real cases. Why our people are so patient, I don’t understand.”

“There are people who talk only about the problems of other countries, but do not see problems in their own country. Maybe it’s time for her (Shimonite – “MK”) to leave and work where she could solve problems she understands?”
