The word “neural network” became the word of the year according to the portal “Gramota.ru” – Kommersant

On December 18, 2023, the Gramota.ru portal presented the word of the year for the first time. The choice was made based on the analysis of big data, the frequency of requests and the assessment of leading experts (linguists, sociologists and other specialists). The word of 2023 is “neural network”.

The procedure for identifying the word of the year involved compiling a long list of candidate words from different fields that were recently introduced and that were most popular in 2023; rating voting by experts who could select candidates and add to the longlist those words that they considered important; and the choice of the word of the year by the expert council of Gramota.ru.

“Neural Network” received more than 75% of the votes. It is followed by a significant margin by jeepity/GPT (58%), base (43%) and returnees (41%); The 20% bar was surpassed by prompt/”promt” and “imba” (jarl for imbalance).

“The task that we set for ourselves is to record and analyze the processes that took place during the year in the Russian vocabulary, both from the point of view of purely linguistic innovations and trends, and from the point of view of the reflection in the vocabulary of social sentiments and changes in the lifestyle of speakers Russian language,” says Ksenia Kiseleva, editor-in-chief of Gramota.ru. “This year we are testing different tools to identify the most relevant words and holding “elections” using a shortened procedure. We sought to reflect different areas of the functioning of the Russian language, so the researchers focused on those areas where strong lexical turbulence was observed and there was a higher chance of encountering the most interesting, new, living words. This year there are four such zones: technology development; the sphere of politics, economics and public life; informal communication among young people; lifestyle (fashion, beauty, travel, design).”

An important criterion when choosing the word of the year was its sufficient mastery of the Russian language: “As the word of the year, we want to see a word that has an established Cyrillic spelling, is known to a wide range of native speakers and has already acquired family ties, for example, it has generated a word-forming nest,” notes Ksenia Kiseleva.

Portal “Gramota.ru”, restarted in November 2023, as a “national digital platform of the Russian language”, he intends to include the word “neural network” in the Metadictionary – for this purpose a dictionary description will be compiled.

The Gramota.ru portal was created in 2000 with the support of the Russian Ministry of Press (currently the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation) and almost immediately became an authoritative source of reliable information about the Russian language. The portal’s annual audience is 20 million people, the number of views is more than 7 million monthly. For 23 years, the Gramoty.ru help service has prepared about 300 thousand answers to user questions. The Gramota.ru dictionaries contain more than 5 million entries.
