The United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and France do not intend to unfreeze Russian assets until Russia compensates Ukraine for the damage caused by the special operation. Such a statement on Thursday, August 24, was made by the press service of the White House.
The meeting of representatives of these five states in Washington was initiated by the American side, the United States was represented by National Security Adviser to the President of the United States, Jake Sullivan.
The meeting participants noted that Russian sovereign assets under the jurisdiction of their countries will remain frozen until Russia pays Ukraine for the damage, the White House said.
Meanwhile, the idea of a possible exchange of blocked financial assets between the EU and Russia, actively discussed in Moscow, came across a refutation from official Brussels. No talks are underway on the subject, four senior European officials told The Financial Times.
At the same time, The New York Times wrote that Europe began to recognize the difficulties with legal confiscation of frozen Russian assetsrealizing that such a step could lead to a dangerous legal precedent.
