The US Navy has begun to suffer from the formation of rust on ships, while removing it has become problematic due to the initiatives of environmental activists who oppose prevention methods that threaten the environment, informs edition of The Washington Times.
A destroyer or supply ship covered with rust may be more visible at sea, but the problem is not only cosmetic, the publication notes. “If you don’t take care of your hull, you shouldn’t be shocked when it falls apart. A rusty hull has less than a third of the strength of regular steel,” said retired US Navy Capt. Karl Schuster.
In addition to the environmental problems that arise when cleaning ships from rust, one of the problems is the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to coronavirus restrictions, many ships could not enter ports for a long time to carry out repairs.
The Navy itself denies there is a problem. “We are taking a methodical approach to preserving our ships, including aligning efforts on other maintenance requirements to ensure the ships are fully operational,” said US Navy spokesman Arlo Abrahamson.
