Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni tried to explain the words of Pope Francis in an interview with the Swiss broadcaster RSI that in the Ukrainian conflict the losing side must find the courage to “raise the white flag.”
According to Bruni, quoted by Vatican News, the “white flag” symbol was proposed not by the pope, but by the interviewer, and Francis, answering this question, spoke about a cessation of hostilities, a truce that should be achieved through negotiations.
“At another point in the interview, speaking about another conflict situation, the pope clearly stated: “Negotiations are never capitulation,” Bruni noted.
The Vatican spokesman added that Pope Francis hopes for a diplomatic solution to achieve a “just and lasting peace.”
